ADC Suspends Jigawa Primaries Collation Amid Violence, Disputes
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended the collation of results from its primary elections in Jigawa State following violence, disputes, and widespread irregularities that disrupted the exercise for more than 48 hours.
The primary election process, which commenced on Monday, reportedly ran into confusion as disagreements among party factions, security concerns, and logistical setbacks affected voting and result compilation across several local government areas.
Collation of results was halted around 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday at Tahir Hotel in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, where party officials and delegates had gathered for the exercise.
Chairman of the ADC Electoral Committee in the state, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Zaki Ahmed, announced the suspension, explaining that results had only been received from 19 of the 27 local government areas in the state.
Ahmed cited several challenges, including alleged electoral malpractice in Babura and Hadejia local government areas, security threats in Gwaram, and the inability to conduct elections in Guri Local Government Area due to clashes involving rival party groups.
He also disclosed that disputes over results from Roni, Auyo, and Kazaure local government areas contributed to the decision to suspend the process.
The disruption comes amid a keenly contested governorship primary between Hon. Adamu Jumbo and Senator Sabo Nakudu, a contest said to have heightened divisions within the party structure in the state.
Results for other elective positions, including State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, and presidential primaries, were also yet to be announced as of Wednesday morning.
Ahmed said the collation exercise was expected to resume after the Eid prayers, originally projected for 2 p.m., although sources within the party indicated that further delays may occur due to unresolved disputes and security concerns.
Delegates and party supporters who spent the night at the collation venue expressed frustration over the prolonged process and uncertainty surrounding the exercise.
The situation has raised concerns over the ADC’s internal cohesion and preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections in Jigawa State.
