Two-Time Ballon d’Or Winner Putellas Confirms Barcelona Exit

Alexia Putellas, widely regarded as one of the greatest women’s footballers of her generation, has confirmed she will leave Barcelona at the end of the current season, bringing the curtain down on a historic 14-year association with the Catalan club.

The 32-year-old Spanish midfielder announced her departure on Tuesday via a video posted to her social media accounts, with Wednesday’s Liga F fixture against Real Sociedad set to be her final appearance in the famous blaugrana colours.

Putellas departs as the most decorated and prolific player in Barcelona’s women’s history, having amassed 500 appearances and 233 goals — both club records — across her time with the first team. Her trophy haul at the club is equally staggering, encompassing four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, 10 Liga F championships, and 10 Copa de la Reina trophies. She also won the Champions League Player of the Season award for a second time in her career this campaign, as Barcelona completed a second quadruple in three years, with Putellas contributing 21 goals and 13 assists across 42 appearances in all competitions.

Barcelona confirmed Putellas’s exit in an official statement, describing her as a legacy, an icon, and a captain, with the club scheduling a special farewell event at Spotify Camp Nou for Wednesday morning. Putellas herself was visibly emotional in the announcement video, reflecting on the magnitude of the chapter she was closing.

“The time has come to acknowledge that I’ve given everything for these colours,” she said, adding that she had no words to describe what living through the journey alongside her teammates had meant to her.

The question of where Putellas heads next has already generated considerable speculation. Sources indicate she has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, the United States, and Mexico, with London City Lionesses and Paris Saint-Germain reported to be among those closely monitoring her availability. Reports from Spanish broadcaster Onda Cero suggest a move to London City is the most likely destination, which would make her one of the highest-profile signings in Women’s Super League history.

A product of the La Masia academy who also had stints with Espanyol and Levante before rejoining Barcelona, Putellas rose from graduate to captain and global ambassador for the women’s game. Her back-to-back Ballon d’Or wins in 2021 and 2022 placed her in rarefied company, and her influence on Barcelona’s transformation into the dominant force in European women’s football over the past decade is considered unparalleled. The club’s farewell tribute captured the sentiment succinctly: Eternal Alexia.
