APC Declares Incumbent Governor Agbu Kefas as Taraba Guber Candidate

The emergence of Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, as the official All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate follows a highly strategic alignment between the state executive and the national ruling party.

The political shift is backed by substantial institutional guarantees and represents a major restructuring of power in the North-East zone.

The APC national leadership, led by National Chairman Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda, finalized the ticket under a structured consensus arrangement.

Rather than going through a fractured primary process, state delegates, major stakeholders, and party executives unified behind the incumbent. The decision is aimed at positioning Taraba firmly within the “center” of national politics, allowing the state to seamlessly tap into the economic and infrastructural programs of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

The consensus ticket also received explicit, unanimous backing from the National Assembly leadership, with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibril confirming the full legislative support of the party.

The ticket marks the climax of a meticulous, multi-stage defection process that began late last year. In December 2025, Governor Kefas took his first formal step by registering as an APC member at his local Hospital Ward in the Wukari Local Government Area, picking up his party membership card directly from the ward chairman. By February 2026, the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo hosted a massive official defection rally where Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, formally received Kefas into the party, promising a robust federal-state development partnership.

The state’s APC leadership clarified that the governor’s transition carried absolutely no preconditions or hidden administrative strings, ensuring an open-door policy for his structures and supporters.

Defending his move to the ruling party, Governor Kefas stated that the choice was driven by a commitment to purposeful governance rather than mere political ambition. He explained that moving Taraba out of the opposition camp was necessary to secure critical dividends of democracy, specifically focusing on expanding regional infrastructure, boosting agricultural output, creating youth employment, and supporting local elders. With the APC machinery now consolidated behind his administration, Kefas enters the governorship race with a fortified political base, shifting Taraba’s long-standing status as a traditional opposition stronghold into a pivotal platform for the ruling party’s regional stability.
