Oshiomhole Clinches Edo North APC Senatorial Ticket Unopposed for Second Term
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has emerged as the All Progressives Congress candidate for the Edo North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections, winning the party’s primary unopposed.
The returning officer for the primary, Kassim Otono, announced the result after the collation exercise, confirming that Oshiomhole was the sole aspirant following the withdrawal of the only other contestant who had filed for nomination.
The development marks a significant consolidation of Oshiomhole’s political standing in Afemai land, coming after months of sustained grassroots mobilisation and a unanimous endorsement by the APC leadership in Edo North. The lone potential challenger had formally written to indicate his withdrawal before the exercise commenced, leaving Oshiomhole to sail through without a single vote cast against him.
The outcome was widely anticipated, given that the party’s state structure and the Edo State Government had thrown their full weight behind the former governor’s second term bid.
Speaking after the result was announced, Oshiomhole described the unopposed victory as a profound honour and a reflection of the trust the people of Edo North had placed in him. He thanked party members across the senatorial district and promised to do even more in a second term. “I will not do one per cent less,” he said, adding that he was asking God for more wisdom, favour and the connections needed to bring more development to Afemai land and contribute to Nigeria’s progress at the national level.
Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State and a one-time national chairman of the APC, first entered the Senate in 2023 when he defeated the then incumbent Senator Francis Alimikhena in the general election. His return to elective politics after years at the apex of party administration was seen at the time as a bold gamble, but his decisive victory at the polls cemented his relevance in Edo North’s political space. He has since cultivated a reputation in the upper chamber for vocal and combative engagement on national issues.
The ticket puts Oshiomhole firmly on course to seek a second consecutive term at the Red Chamber, barring any unforeseen developments before the 2027 general elections. With the APC in firm control of Edo State following Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory in the 2024 governorship election, the party enters the next electoral cycle in a position of considerable strength in the state, and Oshiomhole’s unchallenged emergence is a clear signal of the internal cohesion that currently defines APC’s hold on Edo North.
