Winning Is the Only Acceptable Outcome for Super Eagles Coach, Says Chelle

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has made clear that managing Nigeria comes with an obligation to win, declaring that trophies are the baseline expectation of the role as he prepares his squad for a busy international window that begins with the defence of the Unity Cup in London later this month.

The Franco-Malian tactician, speaking ahead of the tournament at The Valley in Charlton, was unequivocal about the pressure that comes with the job. “When I took the job, my goal was to win. You can ask the Nigeria Football Federation, but definitely, if you are the coach of the Super Eagles, you need to win, so there is a lot of pressure, but I’m ready to do my job and try to give the best for this country,” Chelle said.

His comments come despite reported interest from vacant coaching positions elsewhere in Africa and in the French Ligue 1, signalling that he remains committed to the Nigeria project rather than entertaining offers from other suitors.

The Super Eagles will defend the Unity Cup title they won a year ago in a four-nation tournament featuring Jamaica, Zimbabwe and India, scheduled for May 26 to 30 at The Valley. Chelle has made no secret of his intention to use the tournament as a scouting exercise rather than a full-strength outing, promising to give opportunities to fringe players and players of Nigerian descent based across Europe who have not previously been capped.

He was spotted attending Nigeria Premier Football League matches in the lead-up to his squad announcement, observing games involving Shooting Stars, Enugu Rangers and Bendel Insurance as part of a deliberate effort to assess home-based talents in real match situations.

“There are some good talents in the league. I watched some of them because I follow them, and I wanted to see them in real situations. I have already made my choice, so we will see in a few days,” the coach said.

The Unity Cup, however, is only the opening chapter of a demanding window. Following the London tournament, Nigeria will face Poland on June 3 and Portugal on June 10 in two high-profile friendlies, and Chelle has been emphatic that those encounters will demand a very different approach.

He plans to name his strongest available squad for both games, viewing them as genuine opportunities to climb the FIFA global rankings. “For the big warm-up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first-team players. These are games that can push us up the global ranking if we win them,” he said. Player availability, however, remains a concern after a long and demanding club season. “At this time, this is difficult because for these games against Poland and Portugal, players are on holiday. They have spent a year playing, some have minor injuries, and they need to rest, so it will depend on how they feel.”

Chelle took over as Super Eagles head coach in January 2025 and has since built a record that reflects the stability the team had lacked for years. Since his appointment, Nigeria finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco posting a team record 14 goals in the competition and won the inaugural Unity Cup.

The period ahead, with AFCON qualifiers and the bid to rebuild Nigeria’s global ranking on the horizon, represents the next phase of a project the coach appears determined to see through to its conclusion.
