FEC Approves Smart National Transport Databank Project
The Federal Executive Council has approved the Smart National Transport Databank Project proposed by the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) in Zaria.
This major decision aims to modernise Nigeria’s transport system using advanced technology. The project will create a digital platform to collect, store, and manage transport data across the country.
The new databank is designed to support better planning, improve road safety, and strengthen national security. It will provide real-time information on traffic, mobility, and transport operations.
Officials believe this smart system will help the government make informed decisions and reduce problems like traffic congestion and revenue leakages.
The project will be carried out through a public-private partnership arrangement. Key features include the installation of 250 solar-powered smart gantries across Nigeria, traffic management centres in all states, and RFID-enabled smart tags for vehicles. It will also establish a central national data centre for efficient information sharing.
Under the leadership of NITT’s Director-General, Bayero Farah, the institute worked hard to get this approval. The initiative is expected to create jobs, boost economic growth, and position Nigeria among countries using modern intelligent transport systems. It will help improve coordination between different government agencies involved in transportation.
This approval marks an important step towards building a more efficient and technology-driven transport sector. Many stakeholders are hopeful that the project will bring lasting improvements to how people and goods move across the country.
Implementation is expected to begin soon with support from the private sector and relevant ministries.
