Ekiti State Pays N9.7 Billion for Basic Education Development
The Ekiti State Government has paid over N9.7 billion as counterpart funds to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) between 2022 and 2025.
This payment was made under the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji. The funds have helped to improve basic education across the state through various projects.
Prof. Femi Akinwumi, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), disclosed the figure. He noted that the state paid N1.2 billion in 2022, N1.39 billion in 2023, and N3.55 billion each in 2024 and 2025. These contributions allowed the state to access matching grants from UBEC for building and upgrading schools.
The investment has led to better classrooms, furniture, and learning materials in many public primary schools. It has also supported teacher training and other programmes aimed at raising the standard of basic education. Officials believe the funds are making a real difference in the lives of pupils and teachers.
This strong commitment shows the state government’s dedication to giving children a solid foundation for learning. Many parents and education stakeholders have welcomed the development, hoping it will produce better academic results in the coming years.
The payment of these counterpart funds highlights Ekiti’s focus on education as a key priority. With continued support, more schools are expected to benefit from modern facilities and improved teaching standards. This move is seen as a positive step towards building a brighter future for the state’s young generation.
