Sanwo-Olu Calls for Stronger Private Sector Alliance at Lagos Summit to Boost Tourism
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has renewed calls for deeper public-private collaboration to unlock Africa’s tourism potential, stressing that the sector is a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and youth empowerment.
He made the remarks at the Africa Legacy Summit held at Eko Hotels & Suites as part of activities marking the hotel’s 50th anniversary, where stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of hospitality and tourism on the continent.
According to the governor, tourism should no longer be treated as a “soft” sector but as a critical economic pillar capable of transforming Africa’s economies if properly harnessed. He emphasized that governments alone cannot deliver the level of innovation, infrastructure, and global competitiveness required, urging stronger participation from private investors and industry players.
Sanwo -Olu noted that Lagos State remains committed to creating a business-friendly environment that encourages investment in tourism, hospitality, and creative industries.
He added that strategic partnerships would help position Africa as a globally competitive destination for travel, culture, and investment. The summit, themed around Africa’s hospitality future, brought together policymakers, investors, and tourism stakeholders from across Africa and the Caribbean under the platform of the Africa Legacy Summit.
Discussions focused on improving intra-African connectivity, boosting investment in tourism infrastructure, and strengthening cultural exchange across borders.
Industry leaders at the event echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for improved regional travel access, coordinated tourism policies, and stronger investment in human capital development.
They also underscored the importance of equipping young Africans with skills to thrive in the rapidly evolving hospitality industry. Stakeholders further described tourism as one of Africa’s most underutilized economic assets, capable of diversifying revenue sources beyond oil and other traditional sectors if properly developed.
The summit concluded with a shared call for sustained collaboration between governments and the private sector to transform Africa into a leading global tourism destination.
