Ex-UI VC Calls on Universities to Tackle Real-Life Problems
A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, has urged Nigerian universities to focus their research on solving everyday problems facing the country. He made this call during a major conference at Ajayi Crowther University. According to him, universities should help drive economic growth and national development through useful innovations.
Prof. Olayinka spoke at the 4th Biennial International Conference of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The event had the theme “Frontiers in Science and Technology: Innovations for Sustainable Development in a Dynamic World.” He said many universities do research only for journals and promotions while industries and the nation suffer by importing solutions that could be created locally.
He advised universities to work closely with industries and the government. This would help turn research findings into real products and businesses. He also called for the creation of technology transfer offices and support for spin-off companies from university research.
The Vice Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, agreed with the message. She described Prof. Olayinka as a great mentor and said the keynote address was very timely. She stressed the need for research to move from classrooms and papers into practical solutions that create jobs and improve lives.
This call comes as a strong reminder for Nigerian universities to become centres of problem-solving and innovation. Many hope that more institutions will take up this challenge to support the country’s progress. If followed, it could lead to better inventions, stronger industries, and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
