2027 Elections Will Resemble 1979 Political Contest, Not 2023, Predicts Tambuwal
Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has said the political configuration expected in the 2027 general elections is more likely to reflect the nature of Nigeria’s 1979 transition elections than the 2023 presidential poll.
Tambuwal made the comment during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, where he discussed shifting alliances and the evolving nature of Nigerian politics.
He argued that the country’s electoral landscape remains fluid and that upcoming contests would not simply replicate the patterns seen in the last general election. According to him, future outcomes will be shaped by broader coalitions and changing political interests.
The former governor drew a comparison with the 1979 presidential election, which featured multiple prominent candidates including Shehu Shagari, Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Aminu Kano, and Waziri Ibrahim. He suggested that a similarly competitive multi-actor environment could emerge in 2027.
Tambuwal also maintained that recent political movements, including defections and realignments among key opposition figures, should be viewed as individual decisions rather than signs of fragmentation within political parties. He added that he remains committed to political participation, despite stepping down from a senatorial ambition.
He further stated that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intends to strengthen national security through expanded recruitment into the armed forces and police, while also criticising the current administration’s economic direction.
The comments come as political activity begins to build ahead of the 2027 elections, with expectations of intensified competition and further realignments across major parties.
