President Tinubu Warns Against Divisive Ambitions as APC Primaries Begin

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging them to prioritize party cohesion and avoid actions that could “wreck the boat” as internal primary elections commence nationwide.

The President’s message, delivered ahead of key party contests in May 2026, emphasizes that personal ambitions must not supersede the collective stability and success of the ruling party.

Addressing party stakeholders and aspirants, the President underscored that the APC remains a unified front committed to the Renewed Hope Agenda. He cautioned that divisive tendencies and internal friction during the nomination processes could weaken the party’s position ahead of the general elections. Tinubu noted that while competition is a natural element of democracy, it must be conducted with a sense of responsibility and respect for the party’s institutional integrity. He remarked that the strength of the party lies in its ability to manage diverse interests without compromising its overall structure.

To ensure a peaceful transition through the primary phase, the President advocated for the adoption of consensus arrangements where possible. He argued that such an approach helps to reduce unnecessary conflict and preserves the family spirit within the party. Tinubu urged those who may not emerge as candidates to remain loyal to the party, reminding them that the party’s umbrella is wide enough to accommodate various roles in governance and nation-building beyond elective positions.

The call for unity comes at a time when several states are witnessing intense jockeying for legislative and executive tickets. Party leadership, following the President’s guidance, has reportedly intensified efforts to mediate between competing factions to prevent a repeat of past internal crises that led to legal battles or electoral losses.

By framing the party as a “boat” that all members are traveling in, Tinubu highlighted that a hole drilled by one person could lead to a collective disaster for everyone on board.

The President reiterated his commitment to ensuring a level playing field, but insisted that the ultimate goal is a victorious and united APC. He called on party elders and governors to take the lead in fostering reconciliation and ensuring that the primaries serve as a platform for strengthening the party rather than tearing it apart.
