Baba-Ahmed Reveals Why Obi, Kwankwaso Couldn’t Join PRP Ahead of 2027

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has revealed why former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and New Nigeria People’s Party leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso were unable to conclude talks that would have seen them join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a Hausa political programme on DITV Kaduna, Baba-Ahmed said initial discussions between the PRP and both politicians progressed to an advanced stage before collapsing over disagreements on conditions of entry.

He explained that Obi and Kwankwaso reportedly sought assurances that they would be given the party’s presidential ticket without having to go through internal competition, a request the PRP rejected.

According to him, the party maintained that all aspirants must follow its constitution and internal democratic processes, stressing that no individual could be guaranteed automatic candidacy.

Baba-Ahmed noted that while the PRP acknowledged the political weight and influence of both men, it insisted that they first formally join the party before discussing any elective positions.

He added that the two politicians also requested significant control over party structures due to the number of supporters they intended to bring into the party, a proposal the PRP leadership declined pending formal membership.

The PRP chairman further disclosed that concerns raised about internal disputes within the party and issues surrounding its status on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) platform also contributed to the collapse of the talks.i

He, however, said both sides ended discussions on a cordial note, adding that there was no disagreement or breakdown in relations between the parties involved.

Baba-Ahmed maintained that the PRP remained open to future alliances but would not compromise its rules or internal democratic principles for any individual politician.
