NEMA Distributes Relief Materials to Fire Victims in Cross River Communities
The National Emergency Management Agency (National Emergency Management Agency) has distributed relief materials and building supplies to victims of recent fire outbreaks in Agbokim and Karaboat communities in Cross River State.
The intervention follows a major fire incident in Agbokim in August 2025, which destroyed properties worth millions of naira and left several residents displaced.
Earlier in January 2026, the agency carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected communities after receiving a distress alert from the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency.
Flagging off the distribution exercise on Tuesday, the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, represented by the Head of Operations, NEMA Uyo Office, Mrs Mmandu Aisueni, expressed sympathy with victims and assured them of continued government support.
She said the agency remains committed to providing timely humanitarian assistance to disaster-affected communities across Nigeria.
According to her, the intervention is part of ongoing efforts to support vulnerable populations and help communities recover from emergencies and natural disasters.
The relief package included 600 bags of 25kg rice, 100 bags of beans, and large quantities of garri, alongside building materials such as 400 bags of cement.
Other items distributed included cartons of seasoning, salt, vegetable oil, and tomato paste to support affected households.
The Secretary to the Government of Cross River State, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, commended the federal government and NEMA for their swift response to the disaster and called for sustained support to ease the hardship faced by victims.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Manyo Ayuk expressed gratitude to both federal and state authorities for the timely intervention, describing the support as crucial to their recovery process after the devastating fire incidents.
