Hamzat Certain of Victory in APC Guber Primary
Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election, has declared with absolute certainty that he will triumph in the upcoming APC primary and subsequently become the next Governor of Lagos State.
Speaking to the press after his screening by the APC National Working Committee (NWC) at the Kaduna State Governor’s Lodge, Hamzat dismissed any notion of uncertainty surrounding the primary election, framing his victory as a foregone conclusion.
“Not only will I win the primary election, but I’ll be the next Governor of Lagos State,” Hamzat confidently told journalists. “There is no room for doubt. The process will be conducted, but the outcome is clear.”
The deputy governor’s remarks come amid a carefully orchestrated political succession plan in Lagos State, where he has emerged as the undisputed consensus candidate following a wave of high-level endorsements. The Governance Advisory Council (GAC)—the apex political decision-making body of the APC in Lagos—unanimously adopted Hamzat as its consensus candidate on April 28, 2026. President Bola Tinubu subsequently endorsed Hamzat’s candidacy after a meeting with GAC leaders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also publicly declared Hamzat as his preferred successor, describing him as a man of “integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support.”
Hamzat’s nomination forms were signed by 120 party leaders across Lagos State’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, cementing his position as the party’s flag bearer. His path was further cleared when another APC aspirant, Dr. Olajide Adeniran (Jandor), stepped down in his favour, and former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode extended his congratulations.
Asked about potential challengers within the party, Hamzat remained unmoved. “The party has spoken. The leaders have decided. We are all democrats, but consensus has been reached, and we will move forward together as one family,” he stated.
The deputy governor, who has served under Governor Sanwo-Olu since 2019, previously served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure under former Governor Babatunde Fashola and as Commissioner for Science and Technology under the administration of Akinwunmi Ambode.
With the APC primary scheduled to hold in Lagos next month, Hamzat’s declaration signals his intent to not only secure the party’s ticket but to translate that into electoral victory in the 2027 general election.
