Suspected Vandal Electrocuted while Tampering with PHED Installation
Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc has confirmed that a suspected vandal identified as Khalifa died from electrocution while allegedly attempting to tamper with electricity infrastructure in Oginigba Community.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 24 when the individual reportedly tried to remove a component from a high tension installation, according to a statement issued by the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Olubukola Ilevbare.
The company said the victim, believed to be in his late twenties, died at the scene after disconnecting a pot insulator from a high tension pole. Electricity supply was later restored, leading to the fatal electrocution.
PHED described the incident as a warning against vandalism, noting that damage to power infrastructure disrupts supply and negatively affects customers.
The company also highlighted that offences related to electricity infrastructure attract severe penalties, including long prison terms, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in similar activities.
In a separate development, PHED announced the upgrade of Mbodo Aluu Community to Band A electricity supply, which guarantees a minimum of 20 hours of power daily.
The company said the upgrade involved the installation of new transformers and the replacement of key components, including conductors, insulators and poles.
It added that the move reflects its commitment to improved service delivery and commended residents of the community for settling outstanding electricity bills.
