Anambra Police Foil 21-Year-Old Mother’s Attempt to Sell Newborn Daughter
The Anambra State Police Command has successfully foiled an attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby daughter in the Igbariam area of Oyi Local Government Area.
Acting on credible intelligence provided by a vigilant whistleblower, operatives attached to the Oyi Divisional Headquarters intervened on June 19, 2026, securing both the young mother and her infant before the illicit sale could be finalized.
Police investigations revealed that the suspect had completely hidden her pregnancy and delivery from her family, subsequently seeking refuge at a friend’s house in Igbariam to arrange the transaction.
Following the strategic intervention, the police immediately contacted the woman’s parents. Upon their arrival, the command successfully reunited the mother and newborn with their family to ensure they receive adequate care, emotional support, and proper parental supervision moving forward.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, alongside the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, highly commended the complainant’s sense of social responsibility. They reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on child trafficking, abuse, and exploitation, noting that a comprehensive investigation remains ongoing to uncover all details surrounding the incident and bring any culpable individuals to justice.
