Nurses urge FG to Recruit More Staff over Brain Drain
The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has called on the Federal Government to prioritise the recruitment of more nurses to address workforce shortages linked to rising migration.
The appeal was made by the Federal Health Institutions Sector of the association in a communique issued after its National Executive Council meeting held in April at the National Hospital Abuja.
The communique, signed by National Chairman Morakinyo Rilwan and National Secretary Osinachi Agatha, highlighted concerns over the continued exit of nurses and midwives due to poor working conditions and economic challenges.
The association warned that the trend has created critical staffing gaps and increased pressure on those still in service, leading to burnout across federal health institutions.
It urged the government to expand investment in healthcare infrastructure, equipment and digital tools to improve service delivery and support frontline workers.
The group also commended nurses who provided emergency care to victims of insurgency attacks in Plateau State and Borno State, while calling on authorities to strengthen security and address persistent violence.
In addition, the council acknowledged the resumption of negotiations on the Collective Bargaining Agreement and appealed for the resolution of outstanding demands by nurses and midwives.
Concerns were also raised over salary payment issues, including irregular deductions and delays linked to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.
The association called on the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to correct the anomalies, refund unremitted deductions and ensure the prompt payment of outstanding allowances, including recently approved professional and uniform benefits.
