Tinubu Urged to Back Kwara South Governorship Bid Ahead of 2027
A political stakeholder, Hakeem Olayinka Olaosebikan, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the emergence of a governorship candidate from Kwara South in the 2027 elections, framing the issue as a test of fairness and political balance in the state.
In a statement, Olaosebikan argued that narratives linking insecurity in parts of Kwara South to its eligibility for the governorship are misleading and politically motivated. He questioned the timing of rising security concerns in areas such as Ifelodun, Ekiti and Kaiama, suggesting they are being used to weaken the region’s chances.
He said the president’s endorsement would be decisive in determining the outcome of the election, insisting that the ruling All Progressives Congress remains strong in the state.
The stakeholder also dismissed concerns that a Kwara South candidate could lose to opposition figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, stating that such fears are unfounded.
Olaosebikan further referenced claims circulating in political circles that Senator Saliu Mustapha is leveraging connections to secure the party’s ticket, noting that such perceptions, whether true or not, could affect public trust.
He argued that development has long been concentrated in Ilorin, the state capital, forcing migration from other regions and creating an imbalance that now influences political representation.
Calling the moment a “golden opportunity,” Olaosebikan urged the president to address what he described as decades of political marginalisation of Kwara South, adding that the decision would shape his legacy among Yoruba stakeholders.
He also appealed to leaders within the APC to support the push for a power shift, warning that history would judge the outcome of the struggle for equitable representation in the state.
