ADC Accuses APC of Weakening Opposition, Warns of Threat to Nigeria’s Democracy
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately weakening opposition political parties in Nigeria, warning that such actions could pose a serious threat to the country’s democratic stability.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the allegation while reacting to what he described as sustained efforts to fragment and destabilise opposition platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections. Abdullahi said democracy depends on the existence of strong and functional opposition parties capable of holding those in power accountable.
He warned that any attempt to weaken opposition voices could lead to a political environment dominated by a single party, which he said would undermine transparency, accountability, and healthy democratic competition.
According to him, Nigerians deserve a political system where multiple parties can operate freely and present credible alternatives, stressing that weakening opposition structures would negatively affect governance and public trust in the electoral process.
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments within opposition parties as they prepare for the 2027 elections. The ADC has in recent months positioned itself as part of broader efforts to build a united opposition front capable of challenging the APC at the polls. The APC is yet to formally respond to the latest allegations.
However, party leaders have previously dismissed similar accusations, insisting that opposition parties are responsible for resolving their internal challenges.
