Fernandez Header Sends Chelsea Into FA Cup Final to Face Manchester City
Fernandez Header Sends Chelsea Into FA Cup Final to Face Manchester Cityhelsea reached the FA Cup final for the first time since 2022 after edging out Leeds United 1-0 in a tense semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with Enzo Fernandez’s first-half header proving the difference between the two sides.
The victory sets up a mouth-watering final against Manchester City on May 16, just four days after the Blues sacked head coach Liam Rosenior in the wake of a catastrophic run of form.
The result was laden with irony. Fernandez, who had been dropped by Rosenior twice this month after hinting in an interview that he was considering leaving the club at the end of the season, wore the captain’s armband and delivered the decisive moment.
Wearing a point-to-prove expression from the first whistle, the Argentine midfielder headed Pedro Neto’s pinpoint cross into the far corner from six yards in the 23rd minute to end Chelsea’s goalscoring drought their first goal since a quarter-final victory over Port Vale, having failed to score in their previous three matches.
The goal came against the run of early play. Leeds had the game’s best chance in the 15th minute when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s clever flick found Brenden Aaronson behind the Chelsea defence, but Robert Sanchez threw out a brilliant right foot to deny the American. Chelsea threatened moments later through João Pedro, who drilled a low strike against the near post from close range before Fernandez finally broke the deadlock after Pascal Struijk carelessly surrendered possession deep inside Leeds territory.
Interim boss Calum McFarlane, who had been handed the poisoned chalice of guiding the team days after Rosenior’s exit following a 3-0 hammering at Brighton part of a wretched run of five successive defeats without scoring, the club’s worst such streak since 1912 deserves significant credit for steadying the ship so quickly.
His side managed the occasion with far more authority than they had shown in recent weeks, controlling the second half even as Leeds pushed for an equaliser.
The Yorkshire side were not without their moments. Dominic Calvert-Lewin powered a late header goalward only for Sanchez to tip it over the bar in a crucial intervention, while a heated moment on the touchline erupted after Sanchez went to ground seeking treatment, with Leeds players and staff furious at what they believed was deliberate time-wasting to allow McFarlane to issue tactical instructions. Several bookings followed as tempers boiled over. Chelsea held firm.
For Leeds, it is a painful exit at the penultimate hurdle. Daniel Farke’s side had not reached an FA Cup semi-final since 1987 and had not appeared in the final for 53 years. The defeat also comes at a delicate time in their Premier League season their gap to the relegation zone has narrowed to six points, and they return to league duty when they host relegated Burnley on Friday.
Chelsea, meanwhile, now have the chance to salvage what has been a turbulent and largely disappointing campaign. A Champions League place looks increasingly out of reach they sit ten points behind fifth-placed Aston Villa with just four games of the league season remaining but McFarlane’s men will now prepare to take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who beat second-tier Southampton 2-1 in Saturday’s other semi-final, in what promises to be a compelling Wembley showpiece next month.
