Armed Groups Launch Coordinated Attacks Across Mali, Fighting Ongoing
Armed groups have carried out coordinated attacks in multiple locations across Mali, including the capital, Bamako, with the military confirming that clashes with security forces are ongoing.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the army said its personnel were actively engaged in countering the attackers, noting that operations were underway to restore control in affected areas.
Witnesses reported explosions and sustained gunfire around the Kati military base, a key installation located on the outskirts of Bamako, prompting the deployment of soldiers who sealed off roads in the vicinity.
Additional attacks were reported in Gao and Sevare, indicating a broader, coordinated offensive across different regions of the country.
Security concerns also extended to aviation, with reports indicating that flights into Bamako were suspended early Saturday, although it remains unclear whether airport operations were directly affected.
The United States Embassy in Mali advised its citizens to remain indoors and avoid movement, citing reports of explosions and gunfire near the Modibo Keita International Airport and the Kati area.
Authorities have yet to identify the group responsible for the attacks.
Mali is currently governed by a military administration led by Assimi Goïta, who came to power following a coup in 2020, pledging to stabilise the country and combat insurgent threats.
The country has faced a prolonged security crisis linked to separatist movements in the north and the rise of Islamist militant groups, with large parts of its territory still outside government control despite ongoing military efforts.
