Kaduna South Senator Announces Re-election Bid
Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing the Kaduna South Senatorial District, has formally declared his intention to seek a second term in the 2027 general elections.
The lawmaker, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress in late 2025, is positioning himself as the APC’s candidate for the district under what he describes as a politics of performance.
Katung signalled his re-election ambitions through a week-long tour of all eight local government areas in his senatorial district, during which he engaged youth groups, women leaders, and party faithful at the grassroots level. At each stop, he pointed to federal projects facilitated under his watch as evidence of his legislative impact, including the establishment of a Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia and a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, which he described as long-awaited wins for Southern Kaduna.
The senator urged constituents to prioritise development-driven politics ahead of 2027, arguing that the region’s relevance depends on strategic alignment rather than sentiment.
“Our duty is clear we must galvanise every ward, every polling unit, and every household,” he told stakeholders during the tour.
His bid has already attracted backing from within the APC. One of the leading contenders for the Kaduna South senatorial ticket, Ciroma Almajiri Joseph, announced his withdrawal from the race this week and threw his support behind Katung, citing political maturity and the need for APC unity in Southern Kaduna.
Katung has also been active in expanding the party’s footprint in the district, recently receiving 317 defectors from the PDP into the APC in Kagarko Local Government Area. He told the new members that the 2027 battle would be won door to door, not on social media.
