Police Foil Armed Robbery in Minna, Arrest Woman for Cannabis Possession in Kontagora

The Niger State Police Command has reported a significant breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on crime, successfully foiling an attempted armed robbery in Minna and making a major drug-related arrest in Kontagora.

These operations, carried out over the weekend, highlight the command’s intensified efforts to secure the state as part of a broader security offensive across the North-Central region.

In the state capital, Minna, a tactical team responded to a distress call regarding a group of armed men attempting to invade a residential area. Upon the arrival of the police, the suspects engaged the officers in a brief confrontation before fleeing the scene under the cover of darkness. While no arrests were made during the immediate pursuit, security operatives successfully recovered a locally-made pistol and several rounds of live ammunition abandoned by the criminals. A manhunt has since been launched to track down the fleeing suspects.

In a separate operation in Kontagora, police operatives intercepted a woman suspected of being a major distributor of illicit substances. During a targeted search of her premises, officers discovered a large quantity of cannabis sativa (Indian hemp) concealed in bags. The suspect was taken into custody for further interrogation, with preliminary investigations suggesting she may be linked to a wider network of drug suppliers fueling local crime.

The Commissioner of Police for Niger State commended the officers for their vigilance and urged the public to remain proactive in sharing information with security agencies. He emphasized that the link between drug abuse and violent crime remains a top priority for the command, vowing that there would be no “safe haven” for criminals in the state. The recovered items have been marked as exhibits, and the suspect in Kontagora is expected to be charged to court following the conclusion of the investigation.
