U.S. Ready to Resume Military Action if Iran Rejects Deal, Says Hegseth
The United States has warned it is prepared to resume military operations against Iran if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail, with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stating that American forces remain on standby for potential combat.
Speaking to journalists in Washington, Hegseth said U.S. troops are fully positioned and ready to act should Iran decline a proposed agreement aimed at easing tensions and preventing further escalation.
His remarks highlight the fragile state of negotiations between Washington and Tehran following weeks of heightened hostilities. According to the Defence Secretary, while the U.S. government prefers a diplomatic resolution, it is maintaining what he described as a “high level of preparedness” to ensure a swift response if talks collapse.
He stressed that rejecting the deal could trigger significant consequences, including renewed military strikes.
The warning comes as the United States Department of Defense continues to reinforce its presence in the Middle East, deploying additional military assets and strengthening its strategic posture in the region.
Officials say these measures are intended both to deter aggression and to support diplomatic pressure on Iran.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have remained elevated in recent months, following a series of confrontations that prompted international concern and calls for de-escalation.
Although ceasefire discussions have been ongoing, both sides have accused each other of failing to meet key conditions. Security analysts warn that a breakdown in negotiations could lead to a renewed cycle of conflict, with potential implications for global oil markets and regional stability.
The Middle East remains a critical geopolitical flashpoint, and any escalation between the U.S. and Iran could have far-reaching consequences.
For now, U.S. officials say the focus remains on diplomacy—but the latest remarks from Hegseth underscore that military options remain firmly on the table.
