Kwara APC Elders Demand Consensus Candidate from North for 2027
The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Caucus has called for the adoption of a consensus governorship candidate from the Kwara North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group made the appeal on Saturday while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Ilorin, speaking through its representative, James Ayeni.
The caucus urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to commence early consultations and outline clear guidelines for the selection of party candidates, warning that any delay could trigger internal conflicts among aspirants vying for the APC ticket.
According to the elders, adopting a consensus approach would help maintain party cohesion and ensure a hitch-free primary election in line with the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Reiterating their demand for power rotation, the group insisted that fairness and equity require that the next governor of Kwara State should emerge from Kwara North. They argued that by 2027, Kwara Central would have held the governorship for about 20 years, while Kwara South would have completed eight years in office, leaving Kwara North without representation in the current democratic era.
The caucus further noted that Kwara North has consistently supported the APC in past elections, including in 2015, 2019 and 2023, even when candidates were fielded from other senatorial districts.
It also called on party leaders to engage key stakeholders in the candidate selection process to ensure broad acceptance and reduce the risk of division within the party.
On security, the elders commended ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Kwara State government to tackle insecurity, while expressing sympathy for victims of recent bandit attacks.
They reaffirmed their commitment to the APC and pledged continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
