Opposition Leaders Convene in Abuja, Issue “Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy”
By Momodu Favour
Leaders of major opposition political parties on Wednesday converged on Abuja for a high-level joint press conference themed, “Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy.”
The briefing, held at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Abuja, drew prominent political heavyweights from across party lines, signalling what observers described as a significant moment of opposition alignment ahead of future political developments.
Among those present were key figures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola. Also in attendance were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi.
The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ahmed Ajuji, was also sighted at the venue, alongside prominent NNPP chieftain Buba Galadima.
Although details of the joint address were still emerging at the time of filing this report, insiders hinted that the coalition of opposition leaders is expected to raise concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, governance challenges, electoral integrity, and broader national issues.
The gathering marks one of the most visible assemblies of opposition figures since the last general elections, fuelling speculation about possible strategic collaborations or a unified political front ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
Security presence around the venue was heightened, while party loyalists and members of the public gathered in anticipation of the leaders’ communique.
More details to follow as the briefing progresses.
