Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has accused the Tinubu administration of abandoning 1,600 Nigerian students abroad under the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA).
He claimed the scholarship program was quietly discontinued without notice, leaving students stranded and describing the move as a betrayal of a long-standing diplomatic pact.
Atiku detailed a severe financial crisis, noting that stipends were slashed by over 50% in 2024 before being stopped entirely throughout 2025.
With students now owed over $6,000 each, many are reportedly facing extreme poverty, hunger, and mounting debt while attempting to complete their degrees in foreign countries.
The human toll has been devastating, with Atiku citing the death of a student in Morocco as a direct consequence of the hardship.
Despite protests by parents at government ministries in Abuja, he alleged that the administration has largely ignored the cries for help while students suffer in silence.
Finally, Atiku condemned the government’s suggestion that struggling students should simply return home, calling it “expulsion by neglect.”
He urged the administration to honor its financial commitments and reassure the scholars that they have not been forgotten by their country.
