2027 is My Turn, I Will Step Down for no One, Insists Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has signaled his intention to remain a central figure in Nigerian politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite growing pressure from within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other political circles to step aside for a younger generation of leaders, Atiku maintains that his continued involvement is a matter of national duty.

He argued that the choice of leadership should remain a democratic process determined by the electorate and party members, rather than being dictated by stakeholders seeking his exit.

Atiku justified his stance by raising an alarm over what he describes as Nigeria’s “authoritarian drift” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He expressed deep concern that the country is tilting toward a one-party state or a civilian dictatorship, suggesting that the current government is undermining democratic institutions.

By “digging in,” the former Vice President positioned himself as a necessary check on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting that he must lead the charge to rescue the nation from its current political and economic trajectory.

To counter the dominance of the APC, Atiku is actively advocating for a grand coalition or merger among opposition parties, including the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

He believes that a unified front is the only viable way to challenge the incumbency in 2027.

Alongside these political maneuvers, he has remained a vocal critic of the government’s economic policies specifically the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira arguing that these reforms were poorly executed and have caused unprecedented hardship for the Nigerian people.
