Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, Criticised for Joining Sowore-Led Protest in Abuja

One of the lawyers representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has come under criticism after he was spotted among a small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore.

The protest, reportedly aimed at demanding Kanu’s release, took place earlier in the week and drew only a handful of participants.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that Ejimakor joined the demonstration, sparking debate over his professional judgment and the appropriateness of his actions as a member of Kanu’s legal team.

Observers have questioned Ejimakor’s decision to participate in what some described as a “shambolic protest,” noting that the case against his client is still before the court.

Critics argue that by joining a public protest relating to a matter that is sub judice that is, under judicial consideration Ejimakor may have breached established professional conduct expected of legal practitioners.

Legal analysts said Ejimakor’s participation could raise ethical concerns, particularly at a time when the prosecution has concluded its case and the defence team is expected to present its arguments before the court.

“As one of the lead counsel, Mr. Ejimakor should be focused on preparing a strong defence for his client rather than engaging in extra-legal activities that could be seen as an attempt to influence judicial proceedings,” one commentator noted.

Some legal experts have also urged the relevant legal regulatory bodies to review Ejimakor’s actions, warning that public involvement in politically charged protests linked to ongoing trials may contravene the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners.

Ejimakor, a long-standing member of Kanu’s defence team, has been vocal about his client’s prolonged detention and has frequently accused the federal government of disobeying court orders regarding Kanu’s release.

Neither Ejimakor nor Sowore has issued an official response to the criticism as of press time.

Kanu is currently facing treasonable felony and other related charges before a Federal High Court in Abuja, with the case now at the defence stage following the conclusion of the prosecution’s presentation.
