PSG Stun Tottenham with Late Comeback to Win UEFA Super Cup on Penalties

Paris Saint-Germain have lifted the UEFA Super Cup after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, following a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Just two and a half months after securing their first-ever Champions League title with a resounding 5-0 win over Inter Milan, PSG returned to the big stage. Luis Enrique’s side came into the contest fresh from a summer that included a run to the final of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where they lost 3-0 to Chelsea.

Tottenham, meanwhile, arrived as Europa League champions after edging Manchester United 1-0 to claim their first major trophy in 17 years. The North London side began a new era under Danish coach Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou and became the first manager to see his debut in English football come in a Super Cup final.

The match the first-ever meeting between the two clubs saw Spurs make a dream start. In the 39th minute, Micky van de Ven smashed home on the rebound after Rodrigo Bentancur’s strike was tipped onto the bar by PSG’s new goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier.

Three minutes into the second half, newly appointed captain Cristian Romero doubled the advantage with a powerful header from Pedro Porro’s free-kick.

However, PSG mounted a spirited late comeback. Kang-In Lee halved the deficit in the 85th minute with a superb low drive from 20 yards before Gonçalo Ramos struck deep into stoppage time, heading in from Ousmane Dembélé’s pinpoint cross.

The game went to penalties, and while Vitinha missed early for PSG, Van de Ven was denied by Chevalier and Mathys Tel fired wide for Spurs. Nuno Mendes then stepped up to slot home the decisive spot-kick, sealing PSG’s second trophy of the summer.

Despite Spurs registering a higher expected goals tally (1.38) than PSG (1.17), the Champions League holders once again proved their resilience, adding the Super Cup to their growing list of honours.
