Obasanjo Library Demands ₦3.5 Billion Damages, Public Apology from EFCC Over Alleged Raid

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Police Force seven days to pay ₦3.5 billion in compensation and issue a public apology over what it describes as an “unlawful and malicious raid” on its premises.

According to OOPL Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, the operation took place between the night of August 9 and the afternoon of August 10, 2025, during which over 100 patrons were allegedly brutalized, vehicles were seized, and businesses within the library complex were disrupted.

He said the raid caused severe reputational harm to the institution and its chief promoter, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Ortese claimed that after the operatives left, security personnel discovered 12 expended AK-47 cartridges and a beret believed to belong to the EFCC. He further alleged that several individuals sustained serious injuries, with some still hospitalized and willing to testify if the matter proceeds to court.

Breaking down the compensation demand, OOPL is seeking ₦1 billion for bodily harm, trauma, and property damage suffered by individuals, and ₦2.5 billion for reputational damage, business losses, and harm to the financial standing of the library and its founder.

The institution also insists on a public apology, to be published in widely circulated newspapers and broadcast on national television.

The library’s management is also calling for a thorough, public investigation into the incident, warning that if the EFCC and police fail to comply within seven days, it will initiate legal action.

Ortese accused the agencies of carrying out the operation in a manner that undermines democracy, discourages tourism, and damages Ogun State’s investment climate.

As of press time, neither the EFCC nor the Nigeria Police had issued an official response to the allegations. The incident has sparked public debate, with observers questioning the handling of security operations at high-profile institutions and the broader implications for inter-agency cooperation in Nigeria.
