Ogun Govt Set to Demolish Gbenga Daniel’s Residence, Hotel in Sagamu

The Ogun State Government on Monday sealed off the private residence and hotel of former governor and serving senator, Gbenga Daniel, in Sagamu ahead of a planned demolition over alleged planning violations. Officials from the Ogun State Planning and Development Authority carried out the enforcement at Asoludero Court, Daniel’s residence on Obafemi Awolowo Road, and the Conference Hotel Limited with its annex. The state had earlier issued demolition notices on August 8, citing the absence of statutory approvals for the properties. Senator Daniel, who represents Ogun East, has condemned the move, describing it as politically motivated and a clear case of persecution. He argued that the structures were built long before the enactment of the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, which the government is relying on for the action. “This is an abuse of power and a targeted political vendetta,” Daniel said through his media aide. Responding, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy said the exercise is part of an ongoing urban renewal and planning audit in Government Reserved Areas across Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode. He urged the senator to present the necessary permits and ownership documents rather than politicise the matter. The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has backed Daniel, accusing Governor Abiodun of using state machinery to pursue political grudges ahead of the 2027 senatorial election. The standoff is expected to escalate into a legal battle as Daniel prepares to challenge the demolition notices in court, while the state government continues its urban planning enforcement drive.
