Tinubu Appoints Omotenioye Majekodunmi as New Director-General of Climate Change Council

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), marking a significant step in the federal government’s commitment to sustainable development and climate leadership.
The appointment, announced on July 31, 2025, follows the departure of Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, who previously held the position since June 2024.
The news was disclosed in an official statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the statement, Majekodunmi’s appointment takes immediate effect.
Mrs. Majekodunmi, an environmental lawyer and seasoned climate finance expert, brings over 17 years of experience in climate governance, carbon markets, and renewable energy policy.
Until her appointment, she served as the Financial Adviser to the Council, where she played a key role in coordinating Nigeria’s national climate finance strategies and international partnerships.
Her appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Tinubu administration to strengthen Nigeria’s role in global climate diplomacy while accelerating domestic policies tied to climate resilience, sustainable energy, and economic diversification.
President Tinubu, in the statement, acknowledged the foundational work done by her predecessor, Dr. Madueke, in establishing the Council’s operations and setting the tone for Nigeria’s future climate roadmap.
Majekodunmi’s professional background spans local and international roles, and she has consistently advocated for climate justice, green industrialisation, and equitable access to climate funding for developing nations. She is expected to play a pivotal role in mobilising resources for Nigeria’s climate ambitions under the Paris Agreement and Africa’s Agenda 2063.
Her appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s broader environmental and economic strategy, which positions climate change not only as an environmental imperative but also as a lever for investment, job creation, and national security. The administration has repeatedly stated its intention to make Nigeria a hub for green innovation and sustainable energy in sub-Saharan Africa.
Mrs. Majekodunmi is expected to immediately begin consultations with stakeholders across ministries, international partners, and civil society to align the Council’s next phase with the nation’s long-term climate targets.
