Enugu State Launches “Enugu Air” to Boost Regional Aviation, Economic Growth

In a landmark development for the South-East region of Nigeria, the Enugu State Government has officially launched its state-owned airline, Enugu Air, marking a bold step toward improving regional connectivity, stimulating the local economy, and positioning the state as a hub for aviation and commerce.

The inaugural commercial flight of Enugu Air is scheduled to take off today, July 7, from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

The launch is being celebrated with a high-profile event featuring dignitaries, aviation stakeholders, and government officials. Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), is expected to attend as the special guest of honour.

Governor Peter Mbah, under whose administration the airline was conceptualized and developed, described the project as a cornerstone of his integrated transport and economic vision for the state.

According to him, Enugu Air will not only ease air travel within the region but also serve as a catalyst for employment, tourism, and investment.

“Enugu Air is not just about flying aircraft. It is a symbol of a renewed vision for the economic transformation of our state and the South-East. We are determined to ensure our people and businesses are connected to key economic centres across Nigeria and beyond,” the governor said.

The airline is starting operations with a modest but efficient fleet, including two Embraer E170 jets and one E190—aircraft types known for their fuel efficiency and suitability for regional travel. Initial routes will focus on Nigeria’s major commercial corridors, notably Enugu to Lagos, Enugu to Abuja, and later expansions to Port Harcourt, Kano, and Owerri.

Beyond commercial flights, the state government has signaled its intention to deepen investment in aviation infrastructure. The concession process for Akanu Ibiam International Airport, which is already more than 70% complete, is expected to enhance terminal facilities, cargo handling capabilities, and maintenance services. Enugu also plans to develop a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) centre to reduce dependence on foreign facilities and create additional technical jobs.

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has commended the initiative, noting that the launch of Enugu Air is poised to increase passenger traffic and revenue for both FAAN and Enugu State. She emphasized that it will also contribute significantly to the federal government’s broader aviation roadmap.

Aviation analysts have welcomed the move, describing Enugu Air as a strategic response to the growing demand for reliable regional flight services in Nigeria. The airline is expected to complement existing players like Ibom Air, which has demonstrated that state-owned carriers can thrive with proper governance, efficiency, and vision.

Enugu Air is also part of a broader plan by the Mbah administration to overhaul the state’s transportation ecosystem. Alongside the airline launch, the state government is introducing CNG-powered buses, smart city bus terminals, and improved logistics for cargo and trade—all aimed at modernizing infrastructure and facilitating business.

Residents and business leaders in Enugu and across the South-East have expressed optimism about the launch, seeing it as a sign of progress and renewed ambition.

For many, it represents a long-overdue investment in regional development and a major boost to mobility, especially in a region often underserved by national infrastructure projects.

As Enugu Air takes to the skies, the state government says it remains committed to transparency, safety, and service excellence—hallmarks it believes will set the airline apart and help it become a model for other sub-national aviation ventures in Nigeria.
