NEMA Prepares Southeast for 2025 Floods with Simulation Exercise

The Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has taken proactive steps to prepare stakeholders in the Southeast region for the anticipated 2025 flooding.

As part of its efforts, the agency conducted a flood disaster response simulation exercise, codenamed “Ide Mmiri Odachi,” at the Naval Outpost in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The simulation exercise, which marked the end of a four-day capacity training program, aimed to equip stakeholders with emergency response skills and define their roles and responsibilities in mitigating risks and responding to emergencies at the grassroots level.

The training program was designed to raise public awareness about the predicted floods and test the agency’s plans and protocols.

According to the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the simulation exercise was a demonstration of the agency’s proactiveness in preparing for the predicted floods.

She noted that Abia, Anambra, and Imo states have been identified as high-risk flood-prone areas in the Southeast region, based on the 2025 seasonal climate prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Annual Flood Outlook.

The simulation exercise provided an opportunity for NEMA to test its response plans, identify gaps, and strengthen its multi-agency collaboration.

It also enabled the agency to identify areas for improvement and take necessary steps to enhance its response capabilities.

By conducting this exercise, NEMA has shown its commitment to mitigating the impact of floods in the Southeast region and ensuring the safety of lives and properties.

The “Ide Mmiri Odachi” simulation exercise is a significant step towards preparing the Southeast region for the anticipated 2025 flooding. With the training program and simulation exercise, NEMA has armed stakeholders with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to emergencies and mitigate the risks associated with flooding.

As the region prepares for the predicted floods, NEMA’s proactive approach is expected to make a significant difference in reducing the impact of the disaster.
