Jonathan, Osinbajo, Davido,13 Nigerians Honored as Africa’s Peace Icons

Thirteen distinguished Nigerians have been recognized among the “100 Most Notable Peace Icons in Africa” for 2025, a prestigious continental honor celebrating individuals making outstanding contributions to peacebuilding, unity, and social development across Africa.

Leading the honorees is former President Goodluck Jonathan, awarded the title “Symbol of Peace” for his legacy of promoting national unity and democratic values in Nigeria and across Africa.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was similarly acknowledged for his role in advancing dialogue, governance reforms, and peaceful coexistence.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, widely respected for fostering interfaith harmony and advocating peace between Nigeria’s diverse religious communities, was also named.

Renowned Catholic clerics Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah were honored for promoting peaceful dialogue and social justice through the Church and civic engagement. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, President of LoveWorld Incorporated, was included for his teachings and philanthropic initiatives emphasizing love, unity, and peace.

In business, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, was celebrated for his contributions to economic empowerment and youth entrepreneurship across Africa. Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Femi Otedola, along with Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, were recognized for advancing economic development and stability on the continent.

Nigeria’s entertainment industry was represented by megastars Davido and 2Face Idibia, lauded for leveraging their music platforms to champion peace and social awareness.

Veteran actress Rita Dominic was also listed for promoting cultural understanding and social harmony through the Nigerian film industry.

Completing the list is Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, whose tireless advocacy for global peace and sustainable development has earned her global acclaim.

Also honored was Dr. Tonye Rex Idaminabo, founder of the African Achievers Awards, whose work in celebrating African excellence fosters unity and inspiration across borders.

The Peace Ambassador Agency noted that the 2025 list reflects a growing commitment across Africa to uphold peace through leadership, innovation, culture, and compassion. The honorees, drawn from various walks of life, exemplify the power of individual impact in shaping a more peaceful and prosperous continent.
