China Eyes Nigeria’s Lithium Reserves, Sees Nation as African Leader – Gov. Sule Reveals

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has revealed that China has expressed keen interest in Nigeria’s lithium resources, identifying the country as a key leader on the African continent.

Speaking during a recent public engagement, Governor Sule stated that China’s growing involvement in Nigeria’s mining sector, particularly in lithium exploration and processing, is a direct result of the global superpower’s recognition of Nigeria’s strategic position in Africa.

“China is interested in Nigeria’s lithium because she sees us as an African leader.

“This is a huge opportunity for us to attract investment and build a robust value chain that benefits our people,” the governor said.

Lithium, a critical component in electric vehicle batteries and other clean energy technologies, has seen a surge in global demand. Nigeria, with large untapped reserves especially in states like Nasarawa and Kogi, is becoming an increasingly important player in the global lithium market.

Governor Sule emphasized the importance of managing these resources transparently and strategically to ensure long-term economic growth and industrial development.

He also urged the federal government and local stakeholders to ensure that partnerships with foreign investors prioritize value addition, local employment, and environmental sustainability.

As global interest in Africa’s mineral wealth rises, Nigeria’s positioning as both a resource-rich and politically influential nation continues to draw international attention — and expectations.
