Expert Presses for Understanding of Dementia, Causes , Detection
In a bid to raise awareness about dementia, a public health physician, Dr. Doyin Ogunyemi, has spoken out about the condition, its effects, and the challenges of care. Dr. Ogunyemi, who has extensive experience in public health and geriatrics, emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing dementia, a growing health concern in Nigeria.
According to Dr. Ogunyemi, dementia is a broad term that describes a decline in cognitive function, including memory loss, language difficulties, and problem-solving abilities. “Dementia is not a normal part of aging, but rather a complex condition that affects millions of people worldwide,” she explained in an interview.
The public health physician highlighted the challenges of caring for individuals with dementia, which can be emotionally and physically demanding for family members and caregivers. “Caring for someone with dementia requires patience, understanding, and a supportive environment,” she said. “However, many caregivers lack the necessary skills, resources, and support to provide optimal care, leading to burnout and stress.”
Dr. Ogunyemi’s comments come as Nigeria grapples with a growing dementia crisis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people living with dementia in Nigeria is expected to triple by 2050, with the majority of cases going undiagnosed and untreated.
The public health physician identified some of the common challenges faced by caregivers of individuals with dementia, including lack of awareness and understanding, emotional and physical stress, limited access to resources, and stigma and social isolation.
To address these challenges, Dr. Ogunyemi recommended education and awareness, support for caregivers, community-based care, and research and policy development. “Raising awareness about dementia can help reduce stigma, promote early diagnosis, and improve care outcomes,” she said.
Dr. Ogunyemi’s comments have been welcomed by healthcare professionals and advocacy groups, who have long called for greater awareness and support for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
“Dementia is a critical health issue that affects not only individuals but also families and communities,” said Dr. Emmanuel Otolorin, a geriatrician at the University of Lagos. “We need to work together to raise awareness, improve care, and support those affected by this condition.”
The Nigerian government has also been urged to take action to address the dementia crisis, including increasing funding for dementia research and care, improving access to healthcare services, and providing support for caregivers.
As the conversation around dementia continues to grow, Dr. Ogunyemi’s comments serve as a reminder of the importance of awareness, understanding, and support for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
