Oba of Benin Commends Election Tribunal for Returning Okpebholo as Governor
The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has commended the judgement of the election petition tribunal, which upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State.
The monarch’s endorsement came during a visit by Governor Okpebholo to his palace on Thursday, where he was received with warm hospitality and traditional fanfare.
In his remarks, Oba Ewuare II described Governor Okpebholo as a “true traditional son of the land,” whose election victory was a testament to the will of the people and the ancestors.
The monarch called on his ancestors to bless the governor and his household, praying that they would not allow the alleged handiwork of evil doers to destroy the state.
In a symbolic gesture of goodwill, Oba Ewuare II lifted Governor Okpebholo up from his kneeling position, predicting that his administration would attract more development to the state.
The monarch spoke in the Edo language, saying, “It shall be well with you, your wife, and children. Your journey to Edo, our ancestors approved of it. Our ancestors brought you to restore the lost glory of Edo State, which evil doers wanted.”
Oba Ewuare II emphasized that the traditional institution had been praying for Governor Okpebholo’s success and would continue to do so, to prevent evil forces from destroying the state.
The monarch’s words were met with applause and cheers from the gathering, which included traditional chiefs, palace officials, and supporters of the governor.
Responding to the monarch’s commendation, Governor Okpebholo thanked Oba Ewuare II for his affection and intercession on his behalf and that of the state.
The governor described his election victory at the tribunal as “historic and sweetest judgement ever” in history, highlighting the unanimous decision of the three-member panel of justices.
“This is the first time we have seen a judgement where all the judges agreed that I won the election,” Governor Okpebholo said, beaming with pride and gratitude.
The governor’s remarks were met with thunderous applause, as the gathering celebrated the tribunal’s verdict and the monarch’s endorsement.
As the dust settles on the tribunal’s verdict, Governor Okpebholo is expected to focus on delivering on his campaign promises and promoting the development of the state. The governor has pledged to work with all stakeholders, including the traditional institution, to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the state.
