Traditional Rulers in Osun Throw Weight Behind Former Amotekun Commander for Senate

In a significant boost to his political aspirations, prominent traditional rulers across Osun State have voiced their support for the former Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Brigadier-General Bashir Adewinmbi (rtd), as he seeks the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the upcoming senatorial elections.

The monarchs, representing various communities within the senatorial district, described Adewinmbi as a “disciplined trailblazer” whose tenure at the helm of the state’s security outfit brought a sense of safety and stability to the region.

The endorsement came during a consultative visit by the retired General to the traditional councils, where he formally declared his intention to represent the district in the National Assembly.

During the meetings, the royal fathers took turns to laud the former Amotekun boss for his proactive approach to tackling rural banditry and kidnapping during his time in office. They noted that his transition from military service to domestic security management demonstrated a deep-seated commitment to the welfare of the people, a quality they believe is essential for effective legislative representation.

“We have seen his work firsthand. He did not just sit in an office; he was in the trenches with his men to ensure our farmers could go to their fields without fear,” one of the monarchs remarked. “Such a man understands the grassroots and the security challenges we face better than most.”

The endorsement by the traditional institution adds a heavy layer of legitimacy to Adewinmbi’s campaign within the All Progressives Congress (APC). As the party prepares for its primary elections, the “monarch factor” is expected to influence delegates who often look to their local leaders for direction on which candidate possesses the integrity and local acceptance required to win a general election.

Adewinmbi’s entrance into the race is seen by many political analysts as a move to prioritize human security and regional development in the legislative agenda for Osun. His supporters argue that his military background and administrative experience at the state level provide him with a unique edge in navigating the complexities of federal policymaking.

Responding to the royal fathers, Brigadier-General Adewinmbi expressed his gratitude for the “overwhelming fatherly support.” He promised that his mission in the Senate would be an extension of his service in Amotekun focused on protecting the interests of the vulnerable and ensuring that the senatorial district receives its fair share of federal projects and interventions.
