The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme to improve access to home ownership for workers in the public service.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, made the announcement on Friday in Abuja, saying the initiative would be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

Walson-Jack argued that secure housing has a direct bearing on worker performance and morale.

“When a civil servant knows that their family has a place they can call their own, they come to work with a different swagger with more stability, more focus and more purpose,” she said.

The Head of Service was careful to frame the scheme as more than a welfare gesture, describing it as a reflection of the administration’s governing philosophy. She said a well-supported civil servant is a more effective one, and that a more effective civil service ultimately delivers a stronger Nigeria.

Walson-Jack also pointed to broader ongoing reforms, including plans to transition the public service toward a more digital and paperless system. She stressed that the achievements being celebrated were products of sustained collaboration across ministries, departments and agencies rather than the effort of any single institution.

The housing loan scheme arrives ahead of Workers’ Day on May 1 and forms part of a wider package of welfare improvements for federal workers announced on Friday, which also included a review of civil servant allowances.
