NCDC Urges Calm After Cross River Fresh COVID-19 Case
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reassured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm following the confirmation of a new case of COVID-19 in Cross River State.
In a statement issued by its Director-General, Jide Idris, the agency said there is currently no evidence of widespread transmission, noting that all identified contacts of the infected individual are being closely monitored.
The development comes after the Cross River State Government confirmed the case on Tuesday, years after the World Health Organisation declared an end to the global emergency phase of the pandemic.
According to state health authorities, the index case involves a foreign national who arrived in Nigeria in March and later showed symptoms of the virus. The patient has since been isolated and is said to be in stable condition while receiving treatment.
The NCDC said it has activated response measures in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Health and other partners, including contact tracing, enhanced surveillance and infection prevention protocols.
The agency added that routine monitoring for COVID-19 and other respiratory infections remains ongoing across the country.
Health officials have advised Nigerians to continue observing basic preventive measures such as regular handwashing, proper respiratory hygiene, and seeking medical attention when necessary.
The latest case emerges years after the global outbreak that began in 2019 led to widespread disruptions, with millions of infections and deaths recorded worldwide, including thousands of fatalities and hundreds of thousands of confirmed cases in Nigeria.
Despite the new development, authorities maintain that the situation is under control and have called for calm while response efforts continue.
