INEC’s Defiance of Court Orders Could Wreck 2027 Elections, Warns NNPP
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has raised serious concerns about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party says INEC’s continued refusal to obey court orders is putting the 2027 general elections at great risk. They believe this behaviour could disrupt the entire election process and shake public trust in the system.
NNPP described the situation as both shocking and worrying, especially since INEC is led by a professor of law who should set a good example.
A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory recently gave INEC a clear order. The commission was told to update its records within 72 hours and officially recognise the Dr. Agbo Major Gilbert-led National Working Committee of the NNPP. It was also required to file proof of compliance. However, three weeks have passed with no action from INEC, even though the court papers were properly served.
In a strong statement, NNPP National Secretary, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, said the delay is unacceptable. He stressed that the party needs enough time, just like every other political group, to prepare fairly for the 2027 polls. The NNPP has already begun contempt proceedings against INEC and warned that it will fight the case right up to the Supreme Court if necessary.
The party is now calling on key leaders for urgent help. It wants the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association to step in and investigate the matter. NNPP believes strong action is needed to protect the authority of the courts and stop further damage.
NNPP described INEC’s current approach as an embarrassment to the rule of law and a real threat to democracy.
The party is demanding a complete overhaul of the commission, especially its legal department, to restore confidence. It also warned that the situation goes against the spirit of good governance and could harm the country’s democratic future if nothing is done quickly.
