President Tinubu Approves New Nigeria Police Academy Campus in Ogun with ₦15bn Grant
President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
This development marks a significant expansion of the institution’s capacity to train police personnel.
To facilitate the immediate development of the facility, the President also approved a special take-off grant of N15 billion. This funding is intended to provide the necessary resources to get the new campus operational and functional for students.
The grant will be sourced from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). These funds are earmarked for critical infrastructure, including academic facilities, student accommodation, and essential core training assets required for effective instruction.
The selection of Erinja as the site followed a rigorous consultative process involving key stakeholders. The recommendation was made by a high-level committee comprising the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector General of Police, and the National Universities Commission.
This initiative is designed to bolster institutional governance, improve modern policing education, and enhance national security. Officials emphasized that the site was chosen after carefully evaluating factors such as student capacity, financial feasibility, and the long-term training needs of an expanding Nigeria Police Force.
The decision aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act of 2021, which empowers the Academy to operate as a multi-campus university.
Previously, the institution had functioned solely from its main campus in Wudil, Kano State, since its relocation in 1996.
This new Ogun State facility stands as the first satellite campus to be established under the 2021 Act. The move follows a previous call by the House of Representatives in June 2025 for the decentralization of the Academy’s operations across the country’s six geopolitical zones.
