Ikot Ekpene Chairman Calls for Unity Ahead of Diamond Jubilee

The Chairman of Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Aniefiok Nkom, has called for unity and collaboration among stakeholders as the council prepares to mark its 75th anniversary.

Nkom made the appeal on Friday during a world press conference in Ikot Ekpene, where he unveiled activities for the diamond jubilee celebration themed “Celebrating Heritage, Inspiring the Future, Making the First, the Best.”

He stressed that collective action would be essential in sustaining the legacy of the council’s founding fathers and shaping its future.

The council, established in 1951 as the first experimental local government in Nigeria and British West Africa, has maintained its status as a pioneer in grassroots administration.

Nkom described the anniversary not just as a celebration but a renewal of purpose, noting that the milestone presents an opportunity to reinforce leadership and vision.

He announced a series of events scheduled from April to December 2026, beginning with the official launch and ending with a grand finale later in the year.

A key highlight of the programme, according to him, is the planned coronation and installation of a Paramount Ruler in August, aimed at strengthening traditional leadership structures.

He added that the final celebrations in December would include the commissioning of a modern shopping mall to boost commerce, as well as an exhibition showcasing the area’s raffia products and cultural heritage.

Nkom said the jubilee would also serve as a platform to attract investment, promote economic development, and increase the council’s visibility at both national and international levels.

He identified priority sectors such as agriculture, commerce, and the creative industry, urging investors to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

The chairman further called on indigenes in the diaspora to contribute to the development of the area, while urging traditional rulers to preserve cultural values and the media to project a positive image of the council.
