Nottingham Forest Ends Zaidu Sanusi Porto’s European Dream in Dramatic Quarter-Final
Nottingham Forest secured a historic place in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals on Thursday night, defeating FC Porto 1-0 at the City Ground.
The victory, which seals a 2-1 aggregate win, marks the first time in 42 years that the English side has reached the final four of a major European competition.
The match took a decisive turn just eight minutes in when Porto defender Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red card following a VAR review.
Bednarek’s high challenge on Chris Wood left the Portuguese giants playing with ten men for the vast majority of the contest. Forest capitalized quickly, with Morgan Gibbs-White firing home the only goal of the game in the 12th minute, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Porto fought back with characteristic resilience. Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi was a key figure in a disciplined backline that refused to buckle further, keeping Porto within striking distance until the final whistle. Alongside fellow Nigerian Terem Moffi, Sanusi and the visitors pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, even hitting the woodwork through Alan Varela, but they were unable to find the breakthrough needed to force extra time.
The defeat marks a bitter end to the European campaign for the “Dragões,” who had held Forest to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Estádio do Dragão. For Sanusi and his teammates, focus now shifts back to domestic duties, while Nottingham Forest prepares for a high-stakes semi-final showdown against Aston Villa.
