Peter Obi Can Defeat Tinubu Without Coalition in 2027, Declares NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), does not need to form a coalition with other political parties to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
This declaration comes amid rising speculation about potential mergers and alliances among opposition parties as they strategize to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.
According to the NLC, Obi’s growing popularity and the Labour Party’s expanding grassroots presence are strong enough to secure a victory, independent of political coalitions.
The labour union emphasized that with the right policies and people-focused governance agenda, Obi stands a real chance of winning the presidency on the strength of his movement alone.
“Peter Obi has shown that he is a man of integrity, vision, and capacity. The support he garnered in 2023 was organic, and it continues to grow. Nigerians are looking for a credible alternative, and they see that in him,” a senior NLC official reportedly said.
Peter Obi, responding to questions about his stance on coalitions, recently clarified that he is not against political alliances but would only support coalitions aimed at genuine national development. He insisted that any alliance he joins must be rooted in a shared vision for a better Nigeria—not just a power grab.
“I am not against coalition. In truth, I am for it—not for a power grab but to position Nigeria for greatness,” Obi said, emphasizing that any political collaboration must prioritize the needs and aspirations of Nigerians.
However, some political figures hold a different view. Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, recently stated that Obi cannot defeat Tinubu without aligning with the PDP, citing the Labour Party’s limited national structure and electoral reach.
Despite such critiques, the NLC remains confident in Obi’s political potential and the power of a people-driven campaign. The congress highlighted that the 2023 election results showed a clear shift in public sentiment, particularly among Nigerian youths and urban voters who are increasingly disenchanted with traditional political structures.
As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 elections, the political atmosphere is set to become more competitive. Whether Obi chooses to run independently or with allies, his campaign is expected to be a key force in shaping the nation’s political future.
