LASTMA Clears Operatives of Extortion Allegations, Calls for Media Accountability

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially dismissed allegations that its operatives extorted N100,000 from commercial bus drivers on Coastal Road. Following an internal investigation, the agency confirmed that no illegal financial collections took place.

The investigative panel discovered that the vehicles involved were actually impounded for willful traffic obstruction. The General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare Oki, clarified that all penalties were legally paid into government accounts with documented evidence.

LASTMA emphasized its commitment to transparency and reaffirmed its partnership with the media. The agency highlighted that responsible journalism is essential for promoting traffic discipline and public enlightenment across Lagos State.

However, Mr. Bakare Oki cautioned against the publication of unverified or sensational reports. He noted that defamatory news undermines public trust in government institutions and damages the credibility of the media itself.

To ensure accountability, the agency urged the public to use its official channels for complaints and inquiries. This includes a dedicated toll-free hotline and a physical unit designed to address grievances and verify traffic incidents.

Moving forward, LASTMA called on journalists to uphold ethical standards of accuracy and balance. By strengthening fact-checking processes, both the media and the agency can better serve the public and maintain order on the roads.
