Fast-Track Electoral Reform Legislation, INEC Urges National Assembly

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of key electoral reform legislation to ensure adequate preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a two-day retreat in Lagos with members of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the urgency of finalizing critical amendments to the Electoral Act.

He noted that timely reforms were essential for improving the credibility, transparency, and efficiency of Nigeria’s electoral process.

“The earlier the reform process is concluded, the better for the electoral system. It will give us sufficient time to implement changes, test innovations, and train personnel ahead of the next elections,”Prof. Yakubu said.

The INEC chairman pointed to the positive impact of past reforms, particularly the Electoral Act 2022, which introduced significant improvements such as the extension of the timeline between party primaries and the general elections from 60 to 180 days.

This, he noted, played a key role in the successful conduct of the 2023 elections without delays or postponements.

Yakubu also underscored the need to address emerging challenges in the electoral system, including the digitization of voter registration, the inclusion of marginalized groups, and the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission to deter and prosecute election-related crimes.

Members of the National Assembly present at the retreat pledged to give the proposed reforms due attention. Civil society organizations and international development partners in attendance echoed the call for swift legislative action, stressing that a strengthened electoral framework is vital for sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, INEC is urging lawmakers to act promptly, ensuring the commission has the legal backing and operational clarity needed to conduct free, fair, and credible elections.
