Court Halts Adamawa ADC Congresses Amid Deepening Party Crisis

The High Court of Justice of Adamawa State has ordered the suspension of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) congresses in Adamawa State scheduled to commence on Thursday, directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of a motion on notice.

The order, issued by Ahmed Isa on April 9, 2026, followed a suit filed by Shehu Yohanna Kanbile and three others against key figures and organs of the party, including retired General Ishaya Bauka, Prof. Jefrey Tsware Barminas, the African Democratic Congress, and its National Working Committee.

According to the court document, the judge held that the first defendant had been duly notified of the suit and consequently ordered that all parties “maintain status quo until the determination of the Motion on Notice.” The court further directed that the order be served on all defendants for immediate compliance and fixed April 15, 2026, for hearing.

The development comes amid a deepening crisis within the ADC in Adamawa State, where three factions have emerged, each laying claim to the party’s structure and leadership.

One faction is reportedly loyal to former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and is said to be backing former Governor Jibrilla Bindow for the governorship. Another faction aligns with Senator Aishatu Binani, while a third group is led by Shehu Yohanna, a former state chairman of the party.

Meanwhile, former lawmaker Ishaku Abbo has boycotted the planned congresses, accusing the organisers of failing to engage in negotiations with Binani’s camp over the party’s structure.

Binani, who is also believed to be nursing governorship ambitions under the ADC, has similarly rejected the congresses being organised by the faction linked to Lawal.

The court’s intervention is expected to further shape the unfolding leadership tussle within the party as stakeholders await the outcome of the scheduled hearing.
